In this discussion, we dive into the pros and cons of two of Austin’s most cherished lakes: Lake Travis and Lake Austin. Whether you’re a boat owner or a weekend warrior, we’ll help you weigh the differences and decide which lake might be best.

Lake Travis, the good.

Lake Travis, the OG big brother of Austin’s lake scene, has long been celebrated for its expansive waters, stunning views, and a playground for boating and watersports enthusiasts. As the original go-to destination for lake recreation in the area, it has cherished local spots like the Oasis and family fun at Volente Veach. It has earned a beloved place in the hearts of many.  It was a big part of what made Austin back in the day.

Lake Travis... the not so good.

The problem with Lake Travis is that you can’t bring up the lake without mentioning its currently very low water level. This situation has created a somewhat disheartening view, as the once expansive and inviting lake now has a more bleak and diminished appearance. The lake level seems to depress people.

Lake Austin, the good.

Lake Austin is a gem in the heart of Austin, known for its consistent water levels, lavish lakeside properties and a place to park your boat and party. This lake is an integral part of Austin’s aesthetic, gracing postcards and T-shirts with its presence. It’s the dream location for many seeking an exceptional lakeside lifestyle. Neighborhoods like Tarrytown exemplify the coveted waterfront homes that make Lake Austin so desirable. The lake is also home to iconic venues like Hula Hut and Ski Shores, where you can pull up in your boat and enjoy delicious food while taking in the beautiful surroundings. With its picturesque views and vibrant local spots, Lake Austin offers a unique blend of lake fun.

Lake Austin... the not so good.

Lake Austin, while a popular destination, has its challenges. Its popularity often leads to significant overcrowding, especially during peak seasons. This high volume of boat traffic can make activities like parking the boat or wakesurfing a little more challenging. Additionally, boat ramps can become problematic, with heavy traffic and congestion further complicating and a lot of stress to the experience. Lake Austin’s relatively narrow and shallow nature compared to other large lakes can make it less suitable for larger boats.

Whether you’re navigating the lively, crowded waters of Lake Austin or enjoying the expansive, serene stretches of Lake Travis, each lake provides its own brand of lakeside enjoyment.
